I get more requests for these mods to the DR Rhythm than anything else, and well, i finally found them. Originally from Dave Magnusons resonant frequency site and tweaked a little by me.

Boss DR110 Tone mods;

all potentiometers linear unless stated

Kick Decay - Replace R70 with a 1k pot (try something smaller/and maybe logarithmic as mine has a lot of travel to get to the sweet spot)

Snare Snap - Replace R81 with a 47k pot

Snare Impact (tune) - Replace R76 with a 100k pot

HI Hat filter - Replace R12 with a 1k pot

HI Hat Decay - Replace R20 with a 1M pot

Cymbal Filter - Replace R16 with a 1K pot

Cymbal Decay - Replace R44 with a 1M pot, in series with a 1K resistor

Clap Pitch - Replace R114 with a 47K pot

Clap Decay - Replace R113 with a 100k logarithmic pot.

Create, modify and have fun with a portable DIY synthesizer and amplifier. Make, modify and decorate this rather unique electronic noise-making machine. The workshop will involve basic electronics, soldering and sharp objects.

Part Deux! is the fourth reprisal of the fun box workshop. A 6 oscilator synth is combined with a 1watt amplifier and speaker to create a crazy, portable battery powered noise machine.

A Vibraphonic Festival and Transition exhibition workshop

A rather fun workshop. Inspired by kaspar from the DIY festival we will be taking over a former cell at exeter castle and attempting transform the space into an instrument capable of self generated sound and modulated feedback.

Using found junk, sound generators and the physical space, we will construct diy electronic and mechanical instruments, using the room as one resonant space. Using microphones and spy pickups, furniture, fixtures and junk will be turned into sound generators. The signals will be mixed and fed back into the room until the room resonates continuously, and is modulated by human intervention, accidental or otherwise. Additional sound input will be created with childrens toys, circuit bent devices, random noisemakers and sonic pollution from participants.

Junk will be provided, but please feel free to bring anything that you feel will interact with the room.

The workshop is scheduled for Sat 14th March 09 from 12-5pm. however the space will be open in the week leading up to this, with many other installations and exhibits in the cells. during this time i hope to start building the machine, and any drop-in guests are welcome.

I'm a massive fan of Highlyliquid and his DIY MIDI kits. I own a few, including 2 MIDI'd SK-1's and an MSA that I use on my DR-110. They are bomb proof, people do interesting things with them, and Jon is a top bloke, who actively supports diy communities with lots of giveaways. I won one of his kits in the circuitbending challenge.

However this came out today. Its Tiny (1.04" x .4"), is pre built, has lots of nice MIDI features, has 12 possible outputs and the real deal is that its only $36USD, which will pretty soon be about 2pounds ;#

its could be stuffed into anything, but is especially designed for triggering gameboys, allowing you to sync up all those great 3rd party beatbox synth progs like pounder and muddy gb

A: No. We did for a while and plan on doing it again in the future, but at this time we can only ship within the US.

10,000 Days. a song we made this morning without any shoes on and before breakfast.

perfect pizza dough has been a long quest, but i'm so close. adapted from an anthony worral thompson recipe.

dough;
will make approx 2 12" pizzas
250-350 ml lukewarm water
1 tbsp active dried yeast
550g flour
1tsp salt
1tsp salt
2tbsp honey
2tbsp olive oil

add yeast to lukewarm water, leave in a warm place for 10 minutes, its ready when little bubbles start to form. stir the honey and oil into the yeasty mix.
sift flour , salt and pepper into bowl. make a well and slowly add the yeast mix. add slowly and fork it in until you get a mess of floury bits that aren't too wet, don't add all the mix.
form the floury bits into a ball and knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes. it should be quite easy to work if the yeast mix is ready, and should end up quite light and springy.
set aside in a bowl, with the sides rubbed with oil and a towel over the top in a warm/room temp place for ten minutes.
the dough should now be ready, either roll straight away or put the covered bowl in a cool place.

thats the tricky bit done. the rest is up to you. i like boiling down a gloopy tomato pasta style sauce, mozzarella if i'm flush, torn basil - whatever floats your boat. little flourishes of mine are folding the edges over for a crust, drizzling olive oil and using my awesome pizza stone.

SJ Esau is a poet. Carefully sticking together and looping sounds and instruments to make miniature pop epics. His history is tasty , his live creations are tastier.

Build a fun box with George Lazenbleep. An intense workshop where participants will create and modify a portable noise party machine. Featuring DIY electronics, Circuitbending and heavy recycling.
A more involved workshop, we will construct, modify and re-house a noise generator and mini-amplifier to take away and terrorise the community. Less free-style than the circuit bending workshops, we will follow a plan, build our machines, then experiment with them to find the inner beast/beat.
No experience necessary, but potentially more suited to the tinkerers. All equipment and resources provided, though you may wish to bring a pretty box.

I've been modifying my Boss DR-110 drum machine. It was the last all analogue beat box they produced. It already sounded lovely, but had little tweakability and very limited sync possibilities.
I added 6 trigger inputs for the drums. These are short circuit connections that are triggered via midi with my highly liquid MSA-P decoder.
Seeing as i had the box open I also added the tonal mods detailed on Dave Magnuson's ResonantFrequency site.
The pots and triggers for the mod are housed in a VHS cassette box, connected to the 110 via a 25pin d-type . I used every pin, plus the chassis of the connector. I plan to add the accent trigger in via the trigger out jack.

here's the schematic for my ACITEST box. its a heavily modified hex-inverter oscillator, using 2 inverters as oscillators, one as a pre-amp/distortion and mega diode modulation as can be seen below in the schematic;

short clip of me vj'ing with dj bastardo at gob. modded nes, midines, mpc500, modded sony home studio and colour corrector

i found this image i made of the bend points on the nintendo, and the cic lockout pin that needs disabling to play multi-region carts

i also modded both nes that i use with stereo outs. this splits the audio signal before the mono mixer and gives you the square wave channels on one out and the triangle, noise + samples on another. it also gives a much cleaner signal, ie a much lower noise floor.

Getlofi and CDM are running a bending challenge on oct28th. Go out, get a toy, bend it, document it, then upload it to the internet. i'm happy to host any submissions, including my own. the 28th is a sunday, so if your in exeter that means car boot then steptoes, right? there's a mystery prize too. check cdm + glf for more info.

Yes this sunday 2nd september at the Angel, Queen street, Exeter. Its an all day psyche art freakout with david from musicbox. I'll be manipulating 80's video game graphics and visual bent trickery in a warm wet late 60's style. also will be spinning some cold black vinyl from the days when my dad was cool.

*EDIT* gig is called 'people on sunday' and is organised by birds,orphans and fools, creators of some rather tasty psych comps available from otto retro and brazil videos both on fore st exeter. sunday will feature live music, spoken word, dj's and cinema. i'm on from 4pm. looks like its going to be monthly too :#

France was surprisingly cool btw. Fulfilled a lifetime ambition and 'sang' the muppets version of tenderly with the band. vid soon

It worked. We now have 8 hours of 16 tracks of synchronous music for a theme park ride. Reaper is really nice, I'd strongly recommend it. It made all the tricky tasks like I/O routing and sync editing really straightforward. Btw the music is hilarious, I'll try to post some soon.

More free stuff . I'd been looking for a freeware stand alone drum sound synthesiser. Drumsynth is based on the same analogue synthesis used in all the classic tasty analogue drum machines.

the media centre at exeter phoenix have awarded me one of their digital media bursaries. over the next six months i'll be setting up a workshop space, producing loads of crazy interactive noise toys, running workshops and creating a performance and film for the two short nights festival in december.

Atari Punk

here is my version of the wonderful atari punk console, a version of forest mimmsIII dual oscillator noise maker. my mod gives a nice hot output and much more bass than the original, plus an extra bassness control. more xtras include momentary switch for pulsing the bleeps and body contacts for randomness, including using the whole enclosure as a BC! i've been knocking these out for UK£45 in custom cases with hicks stlye paint jobs. hook me up f you want one.
